IPL technology works by targeting unwanted pigmentation in the skin due to scarring, age spots, sun damage, and vascular lesions. It is non-invasive and non-ablative meaning there is minimal discomfort and tissue damage. This makes Lumecca ideal for treating superficial skin pigmentation which lasers may be too harsh for.
With IPL, the melanin (pigmented cells) or hemoglobin (blood vessels) beneath the top layers of skin are targeted with light. This light is absorbed by the cells which breaks down their outer walls. Once this happens, the cells are then absorbed into the body leaving less cells and pigmentation at the treatment site.
Lumecca differs from standard laser treatment which only uses a single light wavelength instead of a broad spectrum. This allows Lumecca to be more selective in which cells it targets. Lumecca is safe and gentle enough to be used on nearly any area of the body. However, it is most often used on the face, chest, hands, legs, and arms. Moreover, Lumecca can also be used on a variety of skin types and tones.
Several factors can affect how long the effects of Lumecca can last including the condition of the skin, environmental factors, and the type of skin pigmentation that was treated. Most patients will experience noticeable results for at least 6 months.
It is recommended that patients receive maintenance treatment once every 12 months. These repeated treatments can keep the pigmentation away longer and create better results overall.
During your treatment, a technician will guide the handheld Lumecca device over the area of skin to be treated. The light coming from the device will create a warming sensation on the skin that most patients do not find uncomfortable.
Directly after the procedure your skin will likely be reddened and slightly warm to the touch. After this, the pigmentation may appear darker for up to 48 hours.
At that point, the skin will begin to flake off to reveal the improved skin underneath. Over the next week the full results will be revealed and overall skin tone will be evened out.
